Magic
I know it exists
beause I work so hard
to avoid it.
There it sits,
just around
every corner.
I clear my throat,
shift my eyes,
just in time
not to see it.
I sense its
inviting presence
in the dark.
I am quick to sleep,
to avoid it.
I met magic first
in a high desert town.
It cordially invited me
to join it.
Taken back
by the frankness of its intent,
I begged for more time
to think on it.
Twice more I pled for
more time
when I realized the
costs could not be paid
lightly.
An easy choice!
Let loose of the prosaic,
the expected, the dull,
the anchors of a life led
safely.
It sits,
impatiantly
flicks its tail
and waits.
And I procrastinate.
