Lover Boy

lover, there are things you cannot ask me.

you cannot ask me if i still feel your breath
on my neck in the early morning.

if i still see your face inside the moon.

you cannot get down on your knees, hands
in prayer
head bowed down to a higher power
and ask for forgiveness.

lover, you don't have the right.

you fight dirty, all tooth and nail
bloody and mangled
but only on the inside, darling -

only on the inside.

lastly, lover, you don't get to ask me
why i didn't stay

(you held the door wide open).
