Notes About The Poem

April (born 2002) is a reticulated giraffe at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, in the United States. She gained worldwide fame after a live video of her in the late stages of pregnancy, along with the subsequent birth, were put on YouTube. The birth was watched live by nearly 1.2 million viewers. On April 15, 2017, her male calf, Tijari, was born.

All during pregnancy and after delivery, the father Giraffe, Oliver, although still at the park, was not expected to be in contact with April for many months after the birth. However, just recently, when their calf, Tijari turned six months, they cleared April to breed again, and she and Oliver, along with Tijari, were reunited.

Love Letter

Hello my lovely April, the Giraffe,
     your Oliver is here, and I can't wait
to be together once again with you,
     so long it's been since we have had a date.

I do recall that day we made our son!
     They came to split us up, take you away.
We shared our space, divided with a wall
     so we could just touch noses every day.

Dear April, you were pregnant fifteen months!
     And for a long time, he is planned to nurse!
It's nearly been two years since I've come near;
     I cannot be with you or him...a curse!

To be with you was sure my dream come true;
     as a young male, you know you were my first.
Perhaps you can show him that hay is good...
     no longer for your milk, he'll have to thirst!

Oh wow!  Just heard the wonderful good news!
     Our son is weaning faster than they thought.
They said that I can spend some time with you!
     My April, dear, my wait was not for naught.

Make sure they brush you up and shine your toes!
     For here I come, and not for nose-to-nose!
