Loss Is

Loss is feeling everything
All at once
While you stand there feeling numb.
Loss is having electric pain
Shoot through your system
As your heart stops in place.
Loss is feeling
An inescapable scream
Rise from inner depths of immeasurable pain.
Loss is having your soul
Ripped from your body
As it chases one that’s leaving.
Loss is missing a chunk of your heart
That was torn out between seconds.
Loss is there tomorrow.
Loss is here today.
I woke up again believing
Only to be reminded of my pain.
Loss holds your hand
In the back of your mind
As you lay there in your screaming.
Lost is your voice.
Lost is your smile.
Lingering is your scent,
Though I’ve gone a thousand miles—
And you weren’t there for one of them.
