Long Gone

I stand on the edge tonight. The dance floor full of people I avoid. Too busy looking for you, with lines to recite. I’ve decided the time has come to confess. To tell you my heart skips a beat when you’re in sight. I catch a glimpse of you entering the room. A moment later I see the girl, her face alight. Hand in yours. You look back at her, my face goes white. I know when I’m fighting a losing battle, as all generals do. And so, I pivot. Disappear into the night.
