Loneliness
I thought I knew lonely, my friend
Cowboy'd for many years
Stayed in a line shack one whole winter
Brought out all the old fears
Rode drag on a drive to Denver
Lost in the mud and dust
Spoke not a word each lonely day
Talked at night 'cause I must
Spent a whole Spring trappin' beaver
Me and a tent was all
I talked a lot to dead beaver
Wished to hell it was Fall
So I've seen my share of lonely
What I thought it to be
But when that girl up and left me
A whole new world faced me
When those blue eyes lost their sparkle
I was amazed to see
That sparkle was what I lived for -
There's nothing else for me
Lonely is deep and wide and dark -
I didn't know, my friend
It's a hole that keeps all its light
I won't be back again
