Loneliness

Loneliness eats away at you bit by bit,
Did you even realise that you were lonely until you felt the gaping hole, had that sunken feeling?
Loneliness is that thief in the dark;
It creeps in undetected and leaves you with less each time until you wonder where your soul has gone.
Loneliness is indiscriminate.
The most unlikely can be targeted and the most probable left alone.
Loneliness is a character larger than life,
It feeds on all life's energies and devours ones little joys.
Loneliness is the ultimate betrayer;
You feel safe and secure until you realise it has been and most of you is gone.
Loneliness is suffered by millions,
                                                       In secret,
                                                                   In the dark;
                                      Because that is what it needs to survive.
