Lofty Desires
When shall I ever be numbered with the wise?
who to words of wisdom and ideals give rise.
And by way of much learning and experience,
they handle situations with tact and prudence.
When shall I ever be numbered with the learned?
Who in arts and science are thoroughly schooled.
Ever acquiring degrees assiduously earned,
thus in mastery of knowledge they are never fooled.
When shall I ever be numbered with the valiant?
Who to a formidable foe is defiant.
Who like the mighty Julius Caesar came, saw
and conquered, despite being out numbered in war.
When shall I ever be numbered with the affluent?
Admired and coveted for style and glamour.
With choices and taste often governed by splendour,
with the demeanor of lords in language so fluent.
When shall I ever be numbered with the great?
who to great heights aspire regardless of fate.
Ever straining and striving with so much delay,
yet their ambitious spirits never know dismay.
