Lines To a Beloved Poet
(for Wole Soyinka)
My brother with the Iroko-beard
With thickly forested head
What is your life? what is this life to you?
From your ever-drumming hands
Whose blood, whose life is poetry
I notice the silent reply
In unison with other renowned kins
That when the verse fades from lips
To herald from your pen the eclipse
Of the irretrievable silver
Then you are turned into an ancestor.
Brother my jungle breathes and lives
Solely on the verse as on waters
Let verses be more for poetry is life itself!
