True story.
The lilies were a surprise!
One white flower, petals curling,
Greenish buds just starting to open,
Sweet aroma filling the house!
A gift from a friend who
Knew I was downhearted –
Who understood the angst that
Pursued, that wriggled in
Underneath my breastbone,
That made me want to hide!
My friend is one who never
Told me to “buck up”,
That many others had a harder row,
That I should be grateful
For the things I have!
Who never said, “Don’t worry!”
Who never tried to cheer me up
With false hopes, who never
Judged or compared my woes
To her much greater sacrifice!
This friend brought me lilies
To fill my house and weary soul
With loveliness, to lift
My battered spirits with
A sheer and simple beauty
I’d not seen, for blindness
Of self-pity, worry, fear,
In my paralysis of dark!
My friend brought me lilies
And a lightness for my heart!
