Like Frost

The stars on a clear night
Do not make me feel small
Lonely or lost anymore
They are like frost
They appear and reappear
As a cold calamity
Of some ancient heartless truth
Left out in the deep airless dark

A warning
Not to ever look upon the face of creation
As if it were a thing to be marveled at
And in that marveling
It somehow had an invisible power to transfer
Wonder to you
You not realizing
Or mistaking
Its most obvious capacity
Namely
To transfer anything
At all
But emptiness

In that stark understanding
You may feel
Small
Lonely and lost
And like frost
Those emotions will come and go
But if you do not nurse them
You will forget

In time they will disappear
Perhaps
