Notes About The Poem

Like Breath On a Feather

Such a simple little thing
jostled my memory to fore.
Sitting on the back porch swing
while he hummed his music score.

Mountains capped with snow,
in the distance, I could see.
Cold north winds would blow
but he was there with me.

Morning coffee on our swing
warmed me deep within.
To my lips a smile he'd bring
when he'd say, "I love you, Lin."

Behind us, a wisteria vine in bloom
What plans we made together.
All of them faced doom
blown away like breath on a feather.

I took the swing with me.
Honestly, I couldn't bear the thought
of him sitting with another 'she.'
That would break my heart.

Four years it has been stored away
with the memories I hold.
I saw the swing yesterday...
Such a simple little thing, left me cold.

Lin, this is an awesome write and put to rhyme as well. Your imagery portrays sincere nostalgia...it's still cold enough for a fire :), peace, jill

Thanks so much, Jill. If I'm reading your last thought correctly, it may be a fitting end for the swing. It IS a bit chilly in New Orleans today. ;)
