Like Branches
I’ve looked back
Remembering days
And the ways
Our voices persistently sway…
like the branches
And the nights—
Recalling the bright city
Lights
Upon the sidewalks
We told ourselves
We’d walk
But never did
The quiet that followed
It was the least expected
And I was waiting for the crickets
To end this tongue-tied trance
The summer faded
Crickets killed by frost
An endless trance,
That I had never lost
And it all returned one day
Just to be up and taken away
Determined I stand
To return to that land
We’ve discovered.
The crickets never came
