Lights Over the City

Eye witness

wanted a light in
my back yard
for a gathering
near the fire pit
far from a plug
no extension cord long enough
got an idea
I thought it was
as bright as my million-candle flashlight
had balloons left from another party
and the gas that would help them rise
and bring my million candles up
on 20 feet of rope
worked great until
about nine when
a gust of wind untied the rope
took the balloon
high into a night sky
lost my
million-candle flashlight
I put out the fire as
the last few guests left
folded chairs from
around the fire
picked up glasses and bottles
tossed broken ones into the pit
collected melted glass for
my flower garden
every time I cleaned ash
went into my house and everyone was watching TV
News Flash
UFO seen over the city
in no time we heard the roar of
jets from a nearby air base
news reporters were
live on the scene
 talked to a farmer who
claimed it hovered over his field
and as a beam lit up his cattle he
fired a few shots and
it left right away
reports said the air force had it on radar
as it zipped away and
promised an investigation
in the following days
dark vans
trailers
white suits in rows
with beepers in hand
tested soil
measured land
when they traced it to
my backyard
we had to stay inside as
a flood of
people in masks and suits
took pictures where
we had our circle of chairs and
removed ash and crystals from
where they say it landed
then came
with a huge shovel-crane
and hauled my fire pit away

we had a gathering
dancing and songs
some say
 aliens heard us
and came along
I wonder was
 the reports right
or was it my million-candle flashlight
