For Andrea Dietrich's 2023 in one to three short lines poetry contest.

To write on a memorable event or 2023 as a whole.

A Sijo is a type of poem that has three lines containing fourteen to sixteen lines each. The Sijo is a poem of Korean descent where each line of the poem having its own role. The first line is used in order to introduce the theme or topic of the poem. In the second line is meant to delve deeper, give more information about the theme that was introduced in the first line. It's meant to change or agree with and give detail on what the poem is about. The last line of a Sijo poem is the conclusion line. It takes the information from the second line about the topic from the first line and ends it in a way that is both beautiful and satisfying, or challenging depending on the poet. The ending line is not meant to be predictable, in fact, it's meant to twist what you know so that it is unexpected and enjoyable. A Sijo was originally meant to be sung so each line should have its own natural break.

Sijo is the classic form of unrhymed poetry in Korea. Sijo have three long lines. Each line varies between 14 and 16 syllables, with the middle line often the longest. The first line states a theme, the second line counters it, and the third line resolves the poem.

Sweat drips backstage, mouth parched, heart beating at a sprinter's pace. All eyes on me, as lights dim with spotlight honing on mic and lips. Words flow to a standing ovation - I soak it all in. One of the highlights for me in 2023 was performing spoken word for the first time on stage in front of a packed auditorium. It was a memorable experience and probably the greatest in my creative pursuits.

I loved this Silent One. In the future, put your extra info in the top box so that I won't see it. Is this your first sijo? You did an excellent job.

An out in the left field with the butterflies bit, Silent One. At the age of six, my packed room, tho' they'd be hens, was a challenge daily as they do chuckle a bit when you're talking, that's rude, till you assert yourself and then they'll settle down to bobbing their heads looking curiously at you as they did at that venue of yours--you applied yourself and had a captive audience listening to your message and looking attentively. Criticizing your demeanor ends when there are no eggs. Aloha W

This is a wonderful Sijo ! I can so well relate to it. The first performance often makes us a nervous wreck. Though very diffident at heart, the outcome may be unbelievable. When the audience gives us a standing ovation, with a relief and great excitement, we come to realize that it was a feat of strength. You deserve to be congratulated, dear Silent one. I am sure this is going to be a first place winner.

You've painted so much atmosphere into such short space S O. I felt the tension through your words. Great stuff! Congratulations too for just doing what you did. It begs the question (please don't take offence as it's coming from a good place) but why the annonymity here at the Soup if you have the courage to stand in front and recite your wonderful works in front of so many? Perhaps I'm just being nosey but I read many of the bios here so as to understand poets' poetry more. Cheers - Gary

Hi Gary, thank you for your comment and no problem with your question. When I started posting poetry online, I had to do it for two reasons, one no one knew I was a poet, not even my family and second, due to my job at the time. I started spoken word a lot later in 2019 and even then did not tell many people about it. At this event it was the first time my family and many friends has seen me perform, many friends, especially may male one do not know im a poet.. I guess I just got used to be anonymous.. plus some other reason too.. Take care. In regards to this performance, I knew it was my moment..

Dear Silent one, you are an excellent and phenomenal spoken word artist! I am proud of all that you are and how you bring together so many artists to create and inspire them all through your work, i love this sijo. I need to still write mine. I hope and pray that this year you will succeed more and you will receive nothing but all that you deserve. I love the title! Very catchy! And the opening line is brilliant! Standing ovation! Ah! I cant imagine doing that, hate all eyes on me. Best wishes

Well done Silent One, I’ve done a poetry reading of my writes for a church meeting, have read out poems of mine at weddings and funerals, but nothing as grand as what you did, a wonderful achievement, congratulations… Belle

I think our American and English accents would mix well together.. we can do that chap again, what was his name? The poem I did a voice over for?

You've captured your 'moment' quite well. I could feel your excitement coupled with a hint of anxiety...oh, that rush of adrenaline. Where would we be without it. A few years ago, I was summoned to read one of my memoirs before a live audience not knowing that the whole thing was being taped and distributed worldwide. I didn't know that fact until I walked onto the stage. EEGADS. No turning back. My mouth became instantly parched. But what a memorable experience! Thanks for sharing...have a great day, Sara

Thank you Sara, it was such an amazing moment, I was so scared I would forget my words, I remember feeling so hot also, but told myself, that this is my moment and I'm going to show these people what I am made of and the adrenaline really burst through..

Woah, that must have been a very memorable experience for you.. And it's a magnificent one too! You've impeccably captured that moment, in your beautifully descriptive sijo.. Making the readers feel as if they are witnessing your performance of spoken word live.. I've never spoken in front of audiences in thousands..I do have experiences of speaking in front of hundreds. But that's scary, I understand! Love this sijo poem, dear Silent One, I hope you receive many such opportunities, so deserving!
