Lightning Bugs In Jar

lightning bugs in jar
delightful…shaken up, down
it’s another night
of memories— albums loose
family picnics; stains; death

I remember those days; we loved this! I have never seen them as thick as they were in Iowa; we loved this as children! Thank you for a terrific memory Kim.

oh yes, what a metaphor this is!! You shake those bugs and soon enough they die, just like all the wonderful memories when the last person who remembers US has died!!

Things like that bring back childhood memories. I can remember catching some lightning bugs and then when my children did the same. It was fun and we learned about bugs and nature. I enjoyed reading this one. Your presence at my page was assuring. Sara

Didn't see hardly any lightning bugs this summer? Did they turn off their light? As a boy I used to capture them and put them in a jar an watched them blink on nd off until I dropped off to sleep. I've also written a few poems on these magical bugs. / Maurice

Am I off-base connecting the lightning bugs with the last two words of this tanka --- knowing full well that it's not necessarily the case? ~ Crushed between the covers
