Light From the Shadows
Joe was nondescript
not that tall
but not very short
even keel
not loud or quiet
straight down the middle
the last to be noticed
in a crowd
the first to be skipped over
until someone took notice
finding this curiosity
to be worthy of study
the social circle all ruled by
their passions
standing out, being heard,
being number one, accolades
life of the party
except all these
could not be counted on
to be there for you
in time of need
as the number two
not so Joe
willing to submit his ego
for the greater good
be it visiting the sick
taking abuse to stand for the just
spending his time
in anonymous acts of kindness
will not make the front page news
but will get top billing
by those who discern
the extraordinary
