Lifeguard

you alone knew
I was a long way
from my shore
a foot…a lifetime
reality is ruthlessly cold
there can be
desperately empty
times in your life

deep water blues
nowhere to go

a sea of loneliness
simply unfathomable
to those who
pretend to believe
the abandoned heart
holds its rhythm
that lovers can always be
good friends for ever

running on empty
no one to turn to

you alone knew
that waves of pain
have flowed through me
from dusk to dawn
I was drowning
no shoreline in sight
you reached for me
the lifeguard of my soul
