Life In the Balance
I closed my eyes for a moment,
sighing deep within my soul
disbelieving what my ears heard
and what my eyes saw.
Again, again, there are innocent deaths
taken before their time,
taken because someone did not approve
of how they choose to live their lives.
How sad it is, this life that hangs in the balance
of judging others by our terms,
as we would never judge ourselves
now matter how thick and large the beam in our eyes.
Too easily we each fall into the trap
believing our way is the only one
and we vocalize our disgust and contempt,
forgetting all that we have done.
For the future, for our children's sake
let's look more closely at our hearts
and let God be the only judge
of the decisions that we make.
