Life and Death

Youth I said to myself when I grow up I want to be Married A Mother Have some tiny babies to hold in my arms I said to myself I'll keep house and bake some fragrant loaves of bread I'll do my best To be the grandest mother that has ever lived I said to myself I'll have a pool in which to splash and play My children should have fun every day I said to myself Maybe a house at the foot of the mountain or by the shore with friends next door I said to myself I will dream both day and night forever......... The Elder I said to myself..... The cemetery plot is purchased Now I own a piece of land Soon the momument will bear my name Howbeit won't be anything grand Upon it just one line from the Bible "Come away my love" will be engraved So now I have freedom for I don't have to dwell on thoughts where's my last resting place Some days I feel as though it won't be long I'll give this tired body up Until then from old age I will sup____ The Dead I looked around and said.... The grave cannot hold me My spirit is free to soar New Heights I'm gaining as I fly From earth to Heaven's shore Free verse can rhyme but doesn't have to have strict meter Sponsor: Craig Cornish Contest: Talking to Yourself Written this seventh day of July 2013

Very lovely and touching poem, Sara. Very well written! This poem makes one stop and think about life and death in a different light. I personally believe that life does not end after death. I think there is some form of existence after life. There is a poem that I am posting titled "If I Died Now", it is similar to this. I think you might enjoy it. And, thank you for your kind comments, as always!
