Licking the Lure

She stood at the counter Paying for her heart's desire As her friend stood back Looking on at her roaring fire ...hoping for warmth He supported this cause and that Throwing money like rain But his eyes were completely blind To his friend's constant pain ...beating like a drum She didn't have much So she cleaved to relief in any form He reached to lift her up Out of the raging storm ...with a plunk in her pail He worked to uphold the law But longed to balance the scales As he passed the teen in the night The film thinned and fell ...to his yearning knees Money can only buy what it believes Written by Trudy Schrader on 04/13/2021
