Liberty Comes At a High Price

In honor of the Land of the Free

Forget not the tears of the abused
The pain of those persecuted
The courage of the pioneers
The land of the free offered refuge,
Liberty comes at a high price.

Forget not those who defended your rights
At the cost of their life
It is so often the peacemaker’s plight
And the cries of those left behind.
Liberty comes at a high price.

Forget not that you used to be deprived
Desperately seeking a way to survive
But now you can choose the way to thrive
In this land so often criticized.
Liberty comes at a high price.

Forget not that no land has ever offered
Such freedom that to man so matter
Opening its door to a future better
For you and me, brothers and sisters.
Liberty comes at a high price.

All these privileges you enjoy
Could never have been in employ
Without those who braved all odds, giving up their own joy
 In my name, your God.
Liberty comes at a high price.

August 6th, 2007.

We should never forget that many lives have been shed and others left impoverished in our quest to remain free, Caroline. And I couldn't agree with you more about the way our country is "so often criticized" in spite of the safe haven of liberty it has offered to so many throughout the centuries. Excellent writing, as I've come to expect from you. Love, Carolyn

Brilliant piece of poetry and a delightful reading. Lovely to read. Very true and beautiful. My father was a freedom fighter I know the how much he had suffered for bringing Independence to India under Mahatma Gandhi.
