Letter To My Father -From An Adopted Child

A LETTER TO MY FATHER
(from an adopted child)

Hi Dad,
You left so suddenly, without a word,
no time to say our goodbyes.
Somehow it was alright because I was sure
you knew how much you meant to me.
The anguish I felt after you were gone finally
replaced with wonderful memories
that live in my thoughts.
I’ll miss you forever.

You were the finest example of what
the word “father” means.
My biggest cheerleader and my harshest critic
you balanced the two beautifully.
Never needing to explain why
your shoulder was always there
for me to lean on,
your support unconditional,
 I miss your strength.

I often reflect moments you and I shared,
you, with your dry English humor,
our excitement over a good game of hockey
how we both loved the smell of carnations,
our mutual fear of spiders.

The times I disappointed you, you never let it show.
You stood behind me, through everything and anything.
You remain today, the most influential,
inspiring man in my life.

How we laughed….we did a lot of that
when others commented I had your smile, your eyes.
You were fun.
You were home.
Your humor, wit, gentleness and generosity was infectious,
and made you the unforgettable person that you were.

Fortune made us father and daughter
our bond was sealed, not by birth
 but better yet by choice
and you know, Dad,
I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
