dogwood blooms open 
revealing the cross Christ bore 
center crown of thorns 

nail dents on petals 
edge of petals is blood-stained 
glorious Easter

I didn't know about this symbolism, Milton. There were many wild dogwoods on my property in Tallahassee. The next time I see one, I will recall your poem! Best wishes, Carolyn

Carolyn, I had heard this for years. See my comments below to Andrea. Thanks for the read, and I am happy if the symbolism was meaningful for you. My brother was pastor of a church in Tallahassee probably twenty years ago. He's in Panama City now.

So interesting to learn this symbolism about this flower. I went to see one on Google! Should have done that for Goldilocks zone. haha. Too bad, that one stays how it is.

You're all right, Andrea. Thanks for reading this little piece on the dogwood. I've heard that tale for years, but I don't think it is factual. It is also said that the cross Jesus bore was made out of dogwood, which is why it is cursed to being a twisted tree unfit for lumber.
