Leaving Us
He died today and made the news
In the evening papers and on TV
A legend has left
No visible sadness
On the newsreader’s face
Or compassion in the column
Desensitized, detached and distant
It’s just a job of course
But someone hurts at home
All the accolades and achievements
Are less important there
It’s his love and laughter
His tease, his touch
Such lovely eyes and naughty smile
The place is empty now
A hole, a void
There’s space between the lines
Left for you and I
To embalm our special memory
With a little empathy
