Notes About The Poem

Leaving My Identity Behind

Invisible, yet strong like iron bars,
the conceptions, which I regard as sure,
as if they were recorded in the stars,
are like a prison which I must endure.

My identity, blindly adopted,
as a life sentence passed down by a judge
leaves me without choices to be opted,
inside four walls where I can't even budge.

Yet, today, I announce my prison break,
as I leave my predefined self behind.
To new possibilities, I awake.
It's in this moment, I decide my mind.

I will choose what I’ll do and be today,
and what tomorrow brings, I cannot say.

Great idea! And the use of prison and leaving the life sentence etc is quite clever I must highlight! Brilliant write this is and the ending is uplifting! Sometimes we just need to be present ~ right now. Go with the flow Pleasure reading Sending you light always

Thanks, Ink! Sometimes, I think the strongest constraints can be invisible - ideas about ourselves that we can reject when first we become aware of them.

Your sonnet gives the struggle with inherited identity a compelling shape, moving from the confinement of iron bars and a life sentence to the freedom of self-determination. The final couplet balances resolve with uncertainty, embracing choice without claiming to know what tomorrow holds.
