Layers
Grieving you comes in layers
That peel away over time
Some layers are thin scratches
They heal quickly as I remember you with a soft smile and blurry eyes
Others are deeper cuts
They take a while to scab as I cry secretly into my pillow at night
The worst are the stab wounds that puncture my chest
The show my raw insides while I crouch down in the bathroom – face-twisting throat-closing screaming-into-my-hands
These layers will keep peeling away over time
Until the grief, the love, and I, are no more
