Late Winter Thaw
Chilled rivers swelled singing a sloshing lullaby
While past seasons threads flow on by
Warmth from above shifted in high
Fading hoof marks in shallow puddles of wet snow
Made from months or weeks ago
Feel the lurking breath of Mother Nature’s grin
Don’t be fooled by her springtime fling
Winter’s not passed just yet
Springtime buds haven’t even set
Battered limbs postured in place on crushed over paths
The gray little sparrow found a corner to take his dirt bath
A watchful eye peers from a crest on a tree
Waiting patiently for banquet and flea
A songbird takes advantage of a brief late winter vary
Smeared edges on snow left over from plodding looks scary
And I walk with my boots parting the precipitation
Admiring winters late season temptation
