Last Smiled and Cried

When did you last smile, When death clear as a churchyard bell, On a crisp Sunday wreathed around prayers, Rang a chime through prisms of ice Singing of his arrival? As they planted his clay, In earth dense and as red as blood, Rainbows like halos clung to hair and skull, Feverish light on replica teeth Is that when you last smiled? When did you last cry, When celluloid darkened in film noir frames, In a cold November vaulted with grief, Spun a web on mock patterned wallpaper Atop the flaming mantle? As you watched the cathode steam train, Stationary puffing through teashop windows, Vacuums of smoke hung like storm clouds, Were there tears in rivulet synchrony Is that when you last cried?
