Last Moments
'Cause nothing feels like home, you're a thousand miles away
And the hardest part of living
Is just taking breaths to stay'
This is my favorite quote from my favorite song, because I feel as though it really captures how we feel when people we love leave us. My best friend and I sang this on a beach in the rain two years ago, not long before he left my life. Sometimes I see him in the street and think I wonder if he ever felt like this.
Damp sand between our freezing toes, stuck together in clumps
Like those special summer days, that bled into one another
The air was ice that wrapped its bony fingers
Around our shaking wrists, and fingers and throats
We sang to warm our bones
Sang to a faceless being
To the raging ocean's hands that grasped towards us, ever closer
Sang to the clouds, that danced to our tune
Their massive grey shapes shaping and misshaping the sky
Sang to Time
Our fingernails sifting through, our last few moments
And we were sad but we were living; miserable at best.
Miserable at Best – Mayday Parade.
