Last Day of School

Here it is at last! The very last day of school. I have waited so long for it, Now I feel like a fool. The thing that I’ve wished for Has come true on this day. “My children” will all leave me, They’ve grown up, and will go away. We’ve learned about the alphabet, And short vowels and long, Compound words and opposites, We have even made up poems. All the consonants from B-Z And the vowels mixed in too. Oh! The things that we have learned. Why, it’s been a regular zoo. We’ve written stories and read jokes, And we’ve laughed at Dr. Seuss. The Cat in the Hat, and the Berenstain Bears, And fairy tales, and lots and lots of truths. We’ve learned alphabetical order, And hung rhyming words on the door. We’ve learned Dolch words by the hundreds. It’s been lots of fun, but now- no more. We’ve learned to count- to add and subtract. We can do it very, very fast. We time ourselves by the clock and race. -We don’t want to be last. We’re ready for Summer, and fun at home, And fishing, and going to the beach. And Grandma’s house, and the shopping mall, And no one who tries to teach.
