Notes About The Poem

This is written in honor of gay and transvestite youth, who were made by God, who would not have chosen this difficult path on their own.

Lament of a God Child

will I be enough?
can I live as me?
am I a secret?
or do people know?

If they knew, would I be ostracized?
Shamed? Shunned? Despised?
Who would love me if I was fully me?
Where is my mask? Should I wear it?

I fear letting myself loose on the world
I might not be successful
I might not be the best
I might not be me

Will I be able to survive
if no one loves me?

A thoughtful and powerful write, Caren. Much ignorance still prevails in otherwise smart minds. Your poem gives voice to those who hold the kind of dialogue you depicted--often with lonesome self. Much you said in just a few lines.
