Notes About The Poem

LA Lights

High top sneakers laced tight.
Purple, pink and white.
LA Gears, lighting up the night.

Downtown,
Walking around a neon block,
Decompressing, convalescing,
The rhythm of the beat,
The echoing of our feet.

Entrainment healing our shock.
In the adult world,
Billboards advertise love like ours
On sale
In bottles,
On mannequins
Standing silently, sentry at the gates of bliss.
Only 4.99$ if you act now.
Don’t miss.

In LA Lights
Flying past dead stars,
Blue suns and cold systems.

In LA Lights
Flying past dead stars,
Blue suns and cold systems.

Colliding in the middle of a maelstrom,
Pushed together by the solar winds of change.
The onlookers have elongated faces,
Painted in shades of despair.

Casting shadows in alcoves
Along Third Avenue,
At the corner of Toke Street.
They recoil in the aftermath of our bedroom blast,
Passing judgements,
Playing hot potato with the truth
As they shop for items to fill voids
Left by the absence of joy.

I dress in armor.
My pink windbreaker,
Gemini Mission Patches
From summer space camp—
A retro fit.

Nineties girl daydreams,
Astronaut schemes,
Floating away from the mean kids
And their arcade game romance.

In LA Lights
Flying past dead stars,
Blue suns and cold systems.
In LA Lights
Flying past dead stars,
Blue suns and cold systems.

Dead pixels, burned in images,
Replaced by blood and touch.
Lanyards with ID badges
Hang from our necks,
Glowing noose, its grasp loosened
By nostalgic tunes,
Teenage hues of hopes held high.

Wings unfurl in blackened sky,
Eagle rising once more.
Sunlight pools in your iris.
Ray Bans egress from a denim CK pocket,
Aviator frames, hair slicked with Lock it gel.
Lift off!

Subtle tributes to the dare
Of loving me.
Felix Baumgartner
Ditching the safety of a ship
For the free fall
Back to earth’s embrace.

My old mistakes
And patterns burn up in the atmosphere.
Your friction reframes me.

In LA Lights
Flying past dead stars,
Blue suns and cold systems.
In LA Lights
Flying past dead stars,
Blue suns and cold systems.

The old arcade—
Now it harbors money schemes,
Illicit momentary dreams.
They kept the name,
But the age range changed.
The youth replaced with dirt cheap indifference,
Stripped down to the bare necessities
Of lust and dominion.

Passing down streets with names like trees
And people named Frontenac—
A history lesson in every step.

We did not build it.
Starship of wild hope,
Hovering over cities flooded by sin,
Holding onto rafts of innocence.

In LA Lights
Flying past dead stars,
Blue suns and cold systems.
In LA Lights
Flying past dead stars,
Blue suns and cold systems.

Pattering,
Illuminating with
Memory and song.
Keep calm.
Carry on.

I only want my MTV
To see your face in video—
Chromatic angel,
Ring of fire around your head,
Burning thoughts ignite your bed.

The boy is mine,
Dancing in the dark,
Sparks cascading from our feet,
Lighting up those Manic Streets.
