So I haven’t done much haiku. I finally figured out the diff between it and senryu (fast learner here), and then I started seeing a lot of really short ones. I’m wound too tight I guess, looking for the old 5/7/5. Plus, turns out there are lots of other forms that use that as a part.

Exactly. I have the entire Japanese haiku "seasons" collection, and not one follows a 5/7/5 form. Even if it did, who cares; is it a good poem or not? This poem here is really about one of my wife's students. He's autistic. I saw him in the park the other day. When my wife saw him next, she said that her husband saw you in the park. He said exactly what I wrote; so this isn't my poem, and maybe it's not a haiku; but for me it expressed his true happiness...
