Kingdom of Night

As the waves of heat
dissipate to mist
as the cauldron of tar
stops its boil to stick

humidity’s weight
lifts from all lungs
with a breath of breeze
my spirit kingdom comes

the dew of leaves
mixes with sweat
as it cools my skin
this I wont regret

as I lay on the ground
and stare at the sky,
wishing on stars
as they cruised on by

I touched a finger
to the southern cross
and close my eyes
as I connect the dots

That symbol of stars
that brands my night
is a humbling thing
to behold its bright

All burdens that bare
their heart in this awe
are safe in the darkness
and from hands with claws

Slipping to rest
in the fresh of twilight
I wake to a glory
the full moon of sight
