Kids with Heroes and Dreams

  	    What was it about
                 the roar of the crowd
                 the crack of the bat
                    the circling of the bases
headfirst slides, the dust they begat

             What was it about
                  the swish of the net
                  the dripping of sweat
                     in those musty old gyms
                     none of us ever forget

              What was it about
                   that seventy-yard pass
                   dropping like a feather
                   right in the receiver’s lap

The magic moved us all back then
kids with heroes and larger-than-life dreams
‘til we no longer made the team

                 ‘Til Fenway Park and
                  Madison Square Garden
                    became two more venues
                    for hustlers’ schemes

Sadly, the greed and pride takes over! What if we all participate in this world together; yes, with fair competition, not for the almighty dollar and fame (both burn in the end). I remember the sweat of track, the smells, the push and drive.

Lucky you. I'm stuck remembering the smell of the football locker room. OMG. No mother would ever enter that Hades on Earth.

Yep, there was a time, when it was fun and glory, not money. I love the rhymes and flow and subject matter!
