Kennedy's Been Shot

Sirens wailing like the world had ended In the streets an eerie calm that day The heartbeat of our country'd been suspended Kennedy's been shot! My God! No way! Youthful vigor, smile inviting and appealing Camelot! -- He and Jackie'd ushered in America, the news had sent a-reeling Lined our faces, tears instead of grins Woe! The shock wore off, reality set in Agonizingly, did we return to form Drank our morning coffee, tasted thin Sometimes wished we never had been born Death, unwelcome, always begs a reason This death torments our souls these many seasons Trochaic tetrameter/pentameter

Gershon, Don't know how this poem got past. The enigma of Jack & Jackie goes on and on. Walter Cronkite's emotional news bulletin was so poignant to a nation brought to it's knees. Thanks for the telling write for Camelot lost. -Richard

Thanks for the feedback, Arturo... JFK lives on as eternally young and vigorous in my mind. Perhaps it's actually for the best that he didn't live to be old and curmudgeony, as he might have become given all his health issues and his chronically bad back. :) gw

Hi Gershon, I had to learn about what happened to him in school. I did see him get shot on TV later on. My heart immediately went out Jackie. She was a strong woman to live that traumatic this event. - Alexis

You're right about Jackie, Alexis. I feel that her strength, her quiet dignity, kept this nation from becoming completely unglued. We owe a lot to her... long forgotten now, unfortunately. :) gw
