Keep Her Away

Daddy held me
his chest was always strong
his arm a barrier against her
a haven a rest place
He bent his nose to my hair
scenting me
I closed my eyes
no words but the tone was what he used
to get mother
out of sight
move move he said to her
move toward the car stop talking
no one cares

dont touch this boy

she was stumbling along
creaking
glaring at anyone whining
she reached out and pinched my arm
and I burrowed in

he swung to face her and stepped away
holding me close
murmering
a current ran through his body
he was angry
he was calm
I was safe

dont touch my boy

if it could be, he could make her go away
if anyone would want her
when I opened my eyes
she was still there
