Just To Be Sure

this great dog
pushes the door open
to his boys' room
its dark
boys away again
now he stands
close to the bed
and takes a breath of his boy
gone now
for too long
still his bed is fragrant
for this friend
waiting home
softly he pads
to the laundry
back to the door
just to be sure

there's no sign
no happy step
no crack of excitement in the air
no boy yet
but soon
deep deep breathing
out he goes
sits on the landing looking out
just to be sure

I am touched by this. Your words are a gift that touch me in the deepest part of my heart and soul. I watch my black lab do the same thing since my oldest daughter moved out--but I never thought much of it till I read this! Extraordinary piece!
