Just Her

The silence made her pause in the doorway It was strangely quiet It was never quiet on a day like this She felt the little drops of sweat roll down her face Something was wrong She could feel it Where was everyone? Had they left her? Had everyone moved on? Had the rapture taken place here? She felt so alone No one to laugh with No one to hug No one! Just her! She looked around The room was empty It was a bit dark She wasn’t afraid She was just sad She hated being alone It was her birthday Her day! She didn’t deserve to be alone She was home But this didn’t feel like home No one was here Had everyone forgotten it was her birthday? How could they…? Tears welled up in her eyes The tears felt hot She felt hurt She didn’t expect so much She just expected a little love A hug A joke An evening with the people that mean so much to her Her eyes and nose struck a good deal They were leaking uncontrollably She sniffed! And then she sniffed again! She could smell something yummy It smelled like roasted… Roasted turkey? That was odd! Did they leave something in the oven? How careless?! Now, she was sad and upset! So she followed the smell It led her to the kitchen And then…. …they all screamed… …HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
