Notes About The Poem

Despite its pronunciation, just deserts, with one s, is the proper spelling for the phrase meaning "the punishment that one deserves." The phrase is even older than dessert, using an older noun version of desert meaning "deserved reward or punishment," which is spelled like the arid land, but pronounced like the sweet treat.

Just Desserts is a favourite for naming businesses specialising in confectionaries.

Grammar & punctuation checked by Grammarly.com. Used British English spelling.

Just Desserts

Jam or custard-centred is a matter of preference.
Under the counter lights, the many delights beg—
Slathered in cream is a bonus to consider.
There’s no greater buzz than entering the emporium.

Doughnuts have always been my emotional crutch
Ever since my college days, when cramming for exams.
Slipping sugary treats into my school satchel;
Soggy, healthy whole-wheat sandwiches were ignored.
Even during pregnancy, my craving intensified.
Recreating my one secret indulgence always flopped.
The small corner bakery still serves the best temptations—
Shedding the pounds on my hips: a lost cause.

You know, Suzette, that wasn't very nice of you to post this when you know I can't eat wheat! Maybe you didn't know.😊

My taste buds are on overload from your descriptive piece here, a fine acrostic, even w/o the pic which adds graphic color.

Yes, I was tempted to make doughnuts after posting this - but not good for the figure :)

Thank you, Paula. If we lived closer, a coffee & doughnuts morning would have been great. :)

Maybe the muddle up came about when I had removed my contest entry after the contest had closed (to correct the punctuation) and then resubmitted it. All's well that ends well. ;) A doughnut and a cup of coffee would go down well.

Now I'm confused as I appear on your contest results page as one of the twenty three 1st place winners. The beauty of the system is that before proceeding to the final round, it tells us if there are any poems not approved to go through. 33 winners on your list, excluding the 2 AI-generated poems you identified (per your blog post). Got it :)

I used to indulge in m&m’s, but now I avoid. Loved picking up those little treats with their clink in my cup. Also, to avoid candy corn. And both wit Diet Coke…also stay away from that for the most part. Love your poem!

Thanks for sharing your anecdote, Kim. I'm not a fan of cake or sweats, but doughnuts are my Achilles heel ;-)
