Just a Crack in the Door

Your chest goes tight.
The air feels small.
It is just easier to breathe
when you are behind a wall.

You learned this so young,
to guard what is sore.
Because if they don't get close,
they can't walk out the door.

But it gets so heavy,
holding the line.
You watch them all laugh,
and pretend you are fine.

I see how hard you try.
I know that you care.
It is okay to be scared
of the space that we share.

We don't have to fix it.
You don't have to change.
I will just sit on the floor
where it doesn't feel strange.

This is very deep and can be meaningful to anyone needing boundaries. I read so much into this perhaps because of f my own experiences. Well done!

Lovely rhymes expressing complex emotions simply. An apt title for wisdom words of acceptance. First stanza sets tone of story very well. I love how poem moves through time and change to a grounding which seems open ended. The cadence of poem sets off the raw and vulnerable emotions portrayed so that it does not feel overwhelmingly sorrowful. The implicit exposition has explicit imagery - very well done = gives power. Excellent, Angela. Light to you.
