Jurisprudes
They were lawyers in ordinary
Members of judge & co. ltd.
A family concern overseered
By one mr justice umpire
Apparently
A distinguished and honourable beak
widely spread
on this and other legal continents.
Between them
There was only this unity of purpose
That both were shouting contradictions
Across a vacuum
An irrelevant tragedy
In a human setting:
Hammering the law
When that was on his side
And the table
When it was not
But the judge was unmoved!
The verdict was a plain
‘Hang him high!’
Again leveled across a vacuum
And scored from an off-side position
To free law of all foreign elements
And supplant ‘might’ with ‘is’
Legal consequence with legal condition!
Then I was a student
And a multiplicity of norms
Constituted a unity,
A system without system!
