Notes About The Poem

TRADISJON: Etter kirkelig tradisjon brenner man sankthansbål for å minnes at døperen Johannes' ben ble brent av ikke troende. Foto: Scanpix

- June -

The sun constantly light flickers through the air and brighten up long nights
The summer carnations were Gods flower for the Greeks
They bloom earlier than most other species
A delight to the eye throughout the summer

Midsummer night - Midsummer Celebration 23rd and 24th June
A dear child has many names it is said,
and Midsummer night is no exception
Across Norway celebrated it with large fires
Some placed a rag doll on top of the fire
The witches burnt this night

Dance, music, porridge and flower garlands with carnations
Barbeque, Norwegian strawberries and fireworks all night
If a young girl picks seven or nine various mode herbs that night,
and put them under the pillow, she would dream of her future husband

it's nice to hear of your celebrations, do the herbs bring the dream or is it the fragrance of the herbs that bring the dream?

I have mixed feeling about midsummer, because our lovely long evening light will then begin to fade. But this poem makes me look forward to that wonderful festival Anne-Lise. Beautiful.

I really love your Solstice entry Anne-Lise. Traditions live on and on and I loved learning how this day is celebrated in Norway. This poem has winner written all over it! How are those burned fingers? I hope you feel better real soon. I said a prayer for you. #7 Blessings, Connie ; )

After a long winter and a lot of snow Norwegians deserve to celebrate in style! Here in Greece also girls put things under their pillow to see whom they are going to marry! I enjoyed your poem dearest, Anne-Lise! Was a joy to read!
