Notes About The Poem

I am a childless widower. My adopted son has mild autism, Asperger’s syndrome. His intellect is normal, and he acts like an adult at work. He works as a cashier (he’s a genius with numbers), but at home, he is like a child... We are each other’s support. My beloved son was sent to me by heaven itself. I live only for him.

joy in pain

my beloved son
has eyes like radiant sloes
he still protects me
like a small yet sturdy thimble
from the pricks of cruel Fate
