Johnny's Just An American Guy

Johnny's just an American guy
a young American guy who wonders why
People sometimes look at him funny
though it's nothing to do with love or money

Johnny, you see, is a medical rarity
though he seeks neither favors nor charity
It seems that his skin color's subject to change
as Earth's two orbs through the sky roam and range

At three stars, he starts turning dark as ocean's deep
but as the sun rises, Johnny's skin wakes up from its sleep
First it turns tan, then olive, then beige, almost white
He can even get sunburned in the bright noonday light.

In the park after dark, Johnny's an African American
But on the road at mid-day, he's a smiling Irishman
Folks who spot Johnny at each of these places
wonder if it's Johnny or they who mixed up his race

Johnny himself can't understand what's so confusing
he enjoys the changes, even finds them amusing
Why can't folks see that I'm like autumn's leaves on fruit trees
~ ponders the American guy named 'J. Appleseed'

It would have been POTD if I had just eliminated all the 'secret code words' for 'Hi, it's Donald Trump. Miss me yet?' lol. Thanks, Caren

Debra, if I paid you, I wouldn't expect such generous evaluations. Thank you so much. Appreciation and Gratitude, gw

Never heard of him so Google told me lol. Doesn't matter what colour a man's skin is, it's what's under it that counts. Tom

Gershon this is such a wonderful poem. You have said so much that could be, should be, and often is the landscape of America. Even if some people refuse to notice. Great write!

Ken, I appreciate your generous evaluation of this one. Let us hope that Americans will wake up to the perils of the 'Woke Ones.' Happy Sunday to you, Gershon

After "Roots" "No Irish Need Apply" it is clear the USA needs more sowing! Well done, Gershon!

Ha, ha, ha, ha! I guess that even applies to Chicago, now that the Daley - Byrne - Daley era is finally over. Happy weekend, Rico. :) gw

Wonderfully done Gershon. You created such an intriguing riddle from top to bottom only to be solved in your last line about John Chapman. We have friends who are direct descendants of Johnny Appleseed. I love this write. Thanks for bringing this special, selfless, ordinary American, back to the forefront. We need his example more than ever right now. Sending you blessings of crisp apples and apple cider!
