Notes About The Poem

Johnny B Rodrigues and the Boogaloo Kings

A Electric dance and musuc beat hum in the air, a beat that travels from sunlit Fresno Ca Oaktown(Oakland CA) to neon Brooklyn nights and / to Funk/Street Dance (Electric Boogaloo): In the mid-1970s, a related but distinct freestyle street dance emerged in Oakland, California, / Johnny B. Rodrigues and the Boogaloo Kings/ His name stitched into the Boogaloo rhythm seam/This is not just a dance band / Man, this is a weathered gospel of Latin Boogaloo funk motion sounds, a passport for the feet that makes your booty shake/From mid-70s street corners, the Electric Boogaloos dance troops born a language of the body/popping like electric lightning, hips orbiting planets, feet flipping body spinnin'/The Boogaloo dance move. A signature carved by Sam “Boogaloo Sam” Solomon, a founder with a pocket full of new dance spark/ Old-school funk, new-school swagger, a fusion menu where Latin jazz sizzles with uptempo body moves to the beat of bass-N- drum from scratch sonic Djs/Soul Train spins the record forward, spotlight turning the studio into a shrine/the nation watching as the bodies map out a future in grooves/where popping and electric boogaloo begin to sound like a shared heartbeat hat is magic to the soul/This was the moment the dance broke out of the block and found a national voice,/an invitation to move, to improvise, to claim your own shine on a crowded stage/Johnny B. Rodrigues steps up, a voice that slides through the Latin Boogaloo groove, Man, he is too damn groovy to ignore, turning the room into a playground of possibilities/ Bodies sweating together grinding close/The Boogaloo Kings march behind him, a chorus of fearless Horns and Boogaloo percussion drum solos/ Old-school funk, new-school Boogaloo swagger, a fusion menu where Latin jazz sizzles with uptempo brass. telling stories of love sex, and drugs/ Boogaloo parties in the 70s and 80s were not just nights; they were real parties,\where friends gathered, and guns were kept outta sight/ where the only drama was who could pop with the most precision to the tempo of the hip basement Latin DJ/ the Ch Cha Club in the Bronx is Johnny B. And the Boogaloo Kings home club base gig/ It became a temple, a sanctuary where the rhythm ruled and violence stayed outside the door/James Brown, the hardest' workin' soul man in the universe, had a dance step called Soul Boogaloo/ Mr. JB rode the mic like a comet, blessing the dance with cosmic swagger. Johnny B. Rodrigues and his crew carried the flame/ A bridge from Fresno’s hot beginnings to Brooklyn’s sizzelin' Boogaloo dance horizon,\ from vinyl crackle to a chorus of living, breathing bodies boogalizing the Latin boogie beat moving as one/ The Boogaloo Kings aren’t old school relics/ they’re a living echo system of latin boogaloo music, a pulse in the street/ A reminder that groove is community, that funk is memory, that boogaloo dance music can heal the hurt/Let the record spin, let the lights blaze, let the feet decide where the story goes nextJohnny B. Rodrigues and the Boogaloo Kings, keeping the fire of boogaloo alive/and in their latin rhythem percussion groove, Man is burnin' high/ the world learns to dance a little freer, a little louder, a little braver."
