Janet
She's a Tough Girl and looks it, yeah
Hands quick to clench into fists, tongue like a blade.
Chainsmokes and drinks when she cuts school,
Which is often.
Half her friends pregnant, or worse
Before they can drive;
She doesn't expect to turn out any different.
God alone knows what goes on at home,
And He's keeping that to Himself.
Yeah, she's a tough one all right
With that swaggering walk that breathes defiance;
But if you listen real hard
To her empty eyes, in the seconds when the guard slips down
You can sometimes just hear
The shivering cry for love
Flickering along the edges of the razors in her heart.
