Listen to poem:
It's Written in the Stars Tonight
Everybody is talking, stripping myths from the night's sky,
Revealing stars as lonely sparks, hanging cold, up on high.
Telling me the distances, in light-years displayed,
Dispelling the ancient constellation patterns there arrayed.
Talking of the trillions, miles we’ll never roam.
Telling me that heaven is too far from home;
Counting grains of sand in an endless sea;
Draining all the meaning the skies once held for me.
Written in the stars tonight,
It's not their distance, not their age in light;
But the zodiac figures are what I feel is just right—
Written in the stars tonight.
See the ram is rising, pushing through the dawn.
See the bull of Taurus ploughing with its horn.
A lion in the summer with a burning golden mane.
A maiden with her harvest of golden, glinting grain.
Scales that hold the balance when daylight fades.
A scorpion in the shadows where weary wanderer strays.
A crab that guards the shoreline where the tides can sleep.
There's an archer flinging arrows far and wide into the deep.
A goat that climbs the mountains when the sky breaks through.
A water-bearer pouring fish into a lake that's calm, solemn blue.
Written in the stars tonight,
Looking up above, left and right,
Ancient minds offer the only real insight—
Written in the starlit stories, tonight.
So I’m turning from the stats of measured sky.
Back to where the stories and shadows lie.
Where myths still creak, twinkling specks still speak,
Of things we all cherish, things our hearts want to keep.
Written in the stars tonight,
Looking up above, left and right,
Ancient minds offer better insight
Into the myths that still can ignite—
Awe and wonder in eyes bright with delight,
Seeing what's written in the stars tonight.
Not in cold and endless might;
But in the ancient stories we can cite —
As written in the stars tonight,
Written in the stars tonight.
