It’s What We Hoped For!

“At last it’s happened,” Candice gushed
She handed the test results to Robert
Her joyous smile was matched by his
The couple embraced and kissed
“So, daddy, what do you think about that?”
“It’s the best news ever,” he responded
The time would be a bit over six months
Doctor Royce had explained with a grin
“You lives will never be the same again,
But of course you won’t be minding that.
The next visit, we’ll take a sonogram.
Decide if you want to know girl or boy.”
“We’ll start fixing the nursery next week,
Look at cribs and for a rattle,” Robert said
“Let’s pick out a good name for him.”
“Or her,” Candice gently reminded
However, none of those things were to be
Candice awoke to a terrifying sensation
“Robert, help me,” she moaned with fear
“Please take me to the hospital quickly!”
“This is usually due to a serious defect.”
The doctor described the first trimester
“All the organs and system are formed.
It’d have been far worse if the fetus lived.”
Words meant as comfort added to anguish
“What’s wrong with us,” the couple asked
The doctor shook his head and stood to leave
“You’re young, try again,” he whispered
(Based on an event from decades ago.)
